Men's golf team ready for RRAC Tournament
VICTORIA, Texas – Year two of Texas A&M University–San Antonio's men's golf program is reaching its peak and the Jaguars are poised to make for themselves at Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.
With former professional golfer and San Antonio native Christi Cano as the team's head coach, the Jaguars have vastly improved from 2021 to 2022 and have a shot at competing for the top individual and team places at the RRAC's premier event.
The Jaguars have improved their performance over their last few matches as they have competed against NAIA and scholarship-level NJCAA opponents.
A&M–San Antonio returner Jacob Pena and newcomer David Rodriguez both turned in top 25 performances in a crowded field in the team's last event, the Blinn Spring Invitational. Both players carded back-to-back rounds in the mid-70s.
Returning players Pena, along with teammates Javier Jazo and Donald Harper among others, will have an added advantage when play starts Monday. Victoria Country Club was also the host of last year's event.
And as the program, along with all of A&M–San Antonio's athletic programs continue to grow, it paves the way for Cano to continue to build her team heading into the 2022-23 season.
"We're getting 50 to 100 kids every year trying to join the team," Cano said in a recent interview with the Mesquite, A&M–San Antonio's student-published newspaper. "Being a smaller team, you're turning away 95 percent of the students who inquire about being on the team."
The RRAC Tournament tees off at 8:30 a.m. Monday in Victoria. Check back to TAMUSASports.com for a recap of each day's action Monday and Tuesday.
