A&M-San Antonio Softball Makes History with Fall Scrimmage against UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – On October 15, 2022, the softball team made history by scrimmaging the University of Texas at San Antonio. This matchup marked the first time that two four year, public state Universities located in San Antonio faced off in intercollegiate play in the history of the city. The Jaguars and Roadrunners faced played a pair of seven inning games but no official stats were kept due to these being fall scrimmages for both sides. "It's amazing to witness and to be a part of such a historical moment for our program and for the City of San Antonio," exclaimed Director of Athletics Darnell Smith. "Great things are happening and on the horizon for A&M-San Antonio. Go JAGS!"

Head Softball Coach Nicole Dufour put together a very tough fall schedule for the Jaguars in hopes of being prepared to compete in a very competitive Red River Athletic Conference. When asked about the significance of the UTSA games and her fall schedule, coach Dufour responded by saying "UTSA was a great way for us to gain exposure to the tough conference and non-conference schedule we have lined up for the spring. Our goal for the fall is to gain a clear picture of areas of improvement and we feel that by having a tough schedule and playing as much as the NAIA allows we will be better prepared for the spring." In just the second year of the program, the Jaguars finished sixth and made the conference tournament where they finished fourth. The Jaguars will be looking to build off of last year's success by continuing to compete at a high level in the fall.

A&M-San Antonio continues to make tremendous leaps on the diamond. In the very first year of the program, the Jaguars posted a (9-24, 3-15 RRAC) record. In 2022, TAMUSA followed that up by winning more than 20 games and making the conference tournament. In the RRAC tournament, the Jaguars beat Xavier and LSU-Alexandria in the first two rounds then fell to Houston-Victoria to finish the season with a record of (23-30, 14-14 RRAC). Following the conference tournament, Vanessa GarcesAndrea Ortiz, and Peyton Vasquez were all named to the All-RRAC team and Julia Pinzon earned All-Tournament team honors. Five Jaguars were also named NFCA Scholar athletes for their hard work on the field and in the classroom.

The TAMUSA softball team will continue practicing and playing fall games before taking a break and returning to the diamond in February to begin the 2023 regular season.
