Four Jaguars earn All-RRAC honors

SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M University–San Antonio placed three players on the All-Red River Athletic Conference softball teams and one additional player on the All-RRAC Tournament team this past week.

Jaguar newcomers Andrea Ortiz (Mission, Texas / Sharyland Pioneer HS) and Peyton Vasquez (Porter, Texas / Cisco College) were named to the All-RRAC First Team, while second-year player and graduating senior Vanessa Garces (Edinburg, Texas / Coastal Bend College) was named to the conference's Second Team.

Additionally, freshman catcher Julia Pinzon (San Antonio, Texas / Madison HS) was named to the All-RRAC Tournament team after leading the Jaguars to a 2-2 record at the league's postseason event.

A true freshman, Ortiz started every game at third base for the Jaguars and was the named to the conference's First Team at that position. She batted .313 for the Jaguars with 10 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. Ortiz made her claim her starting position early in the season with five multiple-hit games in the Jaguars' first seven contests while committing only two errors during the first two months of the season.

Vasquez, a transfer from two-year Cisco College, alternated between right field and second base for the Jaguars throughout the season. She led A&M–San Antonio in batting with a .396 batting average and is currently the conference's leader in stolen bases with 45. (The nearest RRAC competitor in stolen bases from a team whose season is still going has 38 steals.)

The conference named Garces to the Second Team as an outfielder after she finished the regular season with a batting average of .301, which was also her final season average. She ranked third on the team with 20 RBIs, and raised her batting average from .143 to .301 over her last 29 games of the season.

At this past weekend's postseason RRAC Tournament, Pinzon was the only player with multiple home runs. She homered in back-to-back elimination games Saturday when the Jaguars defeated Xavier (La.) 10-1 and LSU–Alexandria 4-3. She slugged 1.125 for the tournament, and also made a great catch at the fence behind the plate in the last inning of the team's win over LSU–Alexandria that curtailed a comeback by the Generals.

For the season, Pinzon led the Jaguars with six home runs, 34 RBIs, and a .544 slugging percentage. Behind the plate, she threw out eight runners attempting to steal bases.
