Jaguars sweep doubleheader from William Woods (Mo.)
SAN ANTONIO – The Jaguars of Texas A&M University–San Antonio returned to their winning ways Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of William Woods (Mo.).
The Jaguars (3-7) took the opening game by a score of 10-7, and then won the afternoon contest 6-0.
A&M–San Antonio returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Odessa to face Texas–Permian Basin in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Jaguars return home to open Red River Athletic Conference play Saturday, Feb. 26, when they host Huston-Tillotson.
GAME ONE
First-year freshman Julia Pinzon went 2-for-5 with five RBIs, which included a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Jaguars the advantage they needed to secure the win. It was Pinzon's second home run of the season.
The Jaguars took advantage of 13 walks issued by William Woods pitching in the opening game. Peyton Vasquez drew four walks in the game and scored three runs, while Sidney Garza walked three times and scored twice. Andrea Ortiz knocked two RBIs for the Jaguars.
Freshman designated player and pitcher Karina Guzman (pictured) pitched four innings and allowed only three hits and three runs – none of them earned – to pick up her first collegiate victory. Ryanne Limon pitched the final three innings and allowed just two unearned runs to earn the save.
GAME TWO
Junior pitcher Ebbie Rodriguez struck out five and scattered five hits as she tossed a complete-game shutout. It was the second shutout in program history for the Jaguars; Rodriguez also pitched a 1-0 shutout at Jarvis Christian last season.
Pinzon hit what turned out to be the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the first inning with short sacrifice fly to third base foul territory. The Owls' third baseman had to slide to make the catch, and by the time she collected herself, Vasquez was able to score from third base.
A&M–San Antonio added another one in the bottom of the fourth when Melissa Gonzalez knocked an infield single that scored Gabby Mitchell.
William Woods kept the game close thanks to freshman pitcher and Columbus, Texas, native Sarah Randermann. She struck out nine batters and allowed only three unearned runs. However, the Jaguars took advantage of two Owl errors in the bottom of the sixth and scored four more runs to create more distance between themselves and their visitors.
Vasquez went 3-for-3 in the game, including an RBI single in the sixth. Just as she had done in the first game, she also stole two bases in the afternoon contest.
The sweep of William Woods gave the Jaguars their first doubleheader sweep of an NAIA opponent in the program's history.
