Jaguars drop doubleheader to St. Thomas (Texas)

SAN ANTONIO – The Jaguars softball team at Texas A&M University–San Antonio was turned away twice in a Wednesday doubleheader as the visiting Celts of St. Thomas (Texas) claimed two victories.

UST won game one in five innings by a score of 9-1, and then took a 10-3 victory in game two to complete the doubleheader sweep.

The Celts (4-2) took command of game one with four runs – including back-to-back homeruns – to give the visitors a 4-0 lead after three innings. UST added five more runs in the top of the fourth.

The Jaguars scored their lone run of the contest when freshman Julia Pinzon (San Antonio, Texas / Madison) knocked a solo homerun down the left field line in her second collegiate at-bat to lead off the bottom of the fourth. The homerun was the second in A&M–San Antonio's history and first in the state of Texas.

Andrea Ortiz (Mission, Texas / Sharyland Pioneer) and Madeline Arellano (Georgetown, Texas / Ranger College) knocked two hits apiece for the Jaguars in the opening game.

In game two, the Celts wasted no time taking control as they scored nine runs in the top of the first. Gabby Mitchell (San Antonio, Texas / Texas A&M International) knocked two hits for the Jaguars in the second game and had the team's lone RBI.

A&M–San Antonio pitcher Ebbie Rodriguez (Helotes, Texas / Angelina College) allowed only one run in six and two-thirds inning of relief.

In sweeping the doubleheader, the Celts avenged last season's two losses to the Jaguars. Both programs made their debuts in 2021; the Jaguars' two victories over St. Thomas were the first two games in A&M–San Antonio varsity athletics history, as well as the first softball home games in UST history.

The Jaguars return to action Saturday when they host William Woods (Mo.) in a doubleheader at the Tejeda Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

The Owls of William Woods open their season with six games in Central Texas at Red River Athletic Conference opponents. The doubleheader against the Jaguars will be games five and six over a three-day span for the Owls, who open the season Thursday at Huston-Tillotson, then play at Our Lady of the Lake on Friday.
