Jaguars drop doubleheader to intra-city rival Our Lady of the Lake
SAN ANTONIO – The Jaguars of Texas A&M University–San Antonio fought hard but came up short Saturday in the first two games of a four-game, home-and-home series with crosstown rival Our Lady of the Lake.
The visiting Saints prevailed 2-0 in a memorable 10-inning contest in game one before taking game two by a score of 4-1.
Jaguars pitcher Ebbie Rodriguez (Helotes, Texas / Angelina College) and OLLU counterpart Ciera Martinez exchanged scoreless frames for nine complete innings in the opener before the Saints broke through with two runs in the top of the 10th inning. The 10th inning began with each team putting a runner on second base per the international tiebreaker rule.
Rodriguez allowed only one earned run over her 10 innings pitched while scattering nine hits. Her 10 innings pitched was the most for a Jaguars pitcher in a single game this season.
A&M–San Antonio first baseman Melissa Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas / Texas Southern) denied Martinez a 10-inning no-hitter when she knocked a single to left field in the bottom of the frame. The hit moved tiebreaker runner Penelope Garcia (Bandera, Texas / Bandera) to third base, but she would go no further as the Saints preserved the shutout.
In game two, the Saints took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added two more in the sixth before the Jaguars broke their scoring drought in the last of the seventh. Pinch hitter Korrie Cantu (Pharr, Texas / PSJA) drew a leadoff walk and then stole second before moving to third on one of Kameryn Casares' (Edinburg, Texas / Vela) (pictured) two base hits in the game. Cantu later scored on an RBI groundout from Madeline Arellano (Georgetown, Texas / Ranger College).
Jaclyn Lizama (Temple, Texas / Holy Trinity Catholic) pitched all seven innings for the Jaguars, allowing three earned runs and striking out three batters.
