Jaguars rally from seven runs down to defeat Southwest (N.M.)
SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M–San Antonio softball team concluded their first home series of the season in grand fashion Tuesday, overcoming a seven-run deficit to defeat Southwest (N.M.) 9-8.
Kameryn Casares's (Edinburg, Texas / Vela) two-out single to shallow center field scored Caty Rangel (Austin, Texas / Ranger College) to give the Jaguars (7-9, 2-4 RRAC) the walk-off victory.
The game-winning RBI was Casares' fourth of the contest, making her the first Jaguar to knock four RBIs in a single game. She also stole home to cap a six-run fourth inning that saw the Jaguars reduce Southwest's 8-1 lead to a single run.
Casares had a two-RBI hit in the fourth inning, as did Sidney Garza (San Antonio, Texas / Ranger College). The Jaguars tied the game in the fifth inning when Penelope Garcia (Bandera, Texas / Bandera) drew a bases-loaded walk.
Freshman pitcher Jaclynn Lizama (Temple, Texas / Holy Trinity Catholic HS) pitched three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief to pick up her first collegiate victory. Lizama struck out three batters and didn't allow a single hit to a Southwest player.
Southwest (2-11) fell to 1-5 in Red River Athletic Conference play.
The Jaguars will not have to travel far for their next contests, as they will visit NCAA Division I opponent Incarnate Word for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 7.
