Jaguars claim historic win in doubleheader split

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M University–San Antonio softball team was victorious in the school's first-ever home intercollegiate varsity sporting event Monday as they claimed a 7-2 win over Southwest (N.M.).

The teams split their Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader as Southwest won the second game 4-2.

With the Honorable Leo Pacheco, state representative representing the 118th district, and Texas A&M-San Antonio president Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson in attendance, the Jaguars scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure a comfortable victory. Madeline Arellano (Georgetown, Texas / Ranger College) led off the inning with a double, and then scored the go-ahead run on Caty Rangel's (Austin, Texas / Ranger College) RBI double.

The Jaguars (6-9, 1-4 RRAC) took advantage of a two-run error in the inning, which was followed by an RBI single from Sidney Garza (San Antonio, Texas / Ranger College).

Ebbie Rodriguez (Helotes, Texas / Angelina College) picked up the win in relief for the Jaguars, pitching four scoreless innings. Rangel and Vanessa Garces (Edinburg, Texas / Coastal Bend College) each knocked two base hits in the game.

The second game saw the visiting Mustangs take advantage of Jaguar miscues to come away with a 4-2 victory. Garza and Korrie Cantu (Pharr, Texas / PSJA) each knocked RBIs for the Jaguars in game two. Jaclynn Lizama (Temple, Texas / Holy Trinity Catholic HS) took the hard-luck loss for Texas A&M–San Antonio in the second game despite not allowing an earned run.

The Jaguars and Mustangs conclude their series Tuesday with a single game scheduled for noon at Harlandale ISD's Tejeda Softball Complex.
