Jaguars fight hard in doubleheader loss at TLU

SEGUIN, Texas – After an 18-day layoff, the Texas A&M–San Antonio softball team returned to action with a doubleheader at Texas Lutheran on Wednesday.

Texas Lutheran, the defending NCAA Division III national champion and ranked No. 4 in the NFCA Division III Coaches poll, proved to be a tall order for the Jaguars, as the host Bulldogs swept the doubleheader by scores of 8-0 and 6-0.

Texas A&M–San Antonio head softball coach Nicole Dufour was able to try out new lineups and give almost everyone on the active roster some field time as the team prepares for its first-ever home games Monday when the Jaguars host Southwest (N.M.).

Britney Garcia (Weslaco, Texas / Coastal Bend College), the team's leading hitter, stretched her current hitting streak to six games with a leadoff single in the opening contest.

In game two, Korrie Cantu (Pharr, Texas / PSJA) and Caty Rangel (Austin, Texas / Ranger College) each knocked base hits for the Jaguars (5-8). Freshman pitcher Jaclynn Lizama (Temple, Texas / Holy Trinity Catholic HS) (pictured) gave her strongest performance of the season, giving up four runs over five innings. She held TLU scoreless over the first three innings.

The Jaguars' first-ever home games will be Monday, March 29, when Texas A&M–San Antonio hosts Southwest (N.M.) in a conference doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Tejeda Softball Complex, located at 1109 93rd St. in San Antonio, not far from the campus.

The series will conclude Tuesday with a third game between the teams, scheduled for a noon start.
